Project-Based Learning Begins Monday!

With the start of our first Team Teach course, Earth Science, comes our first Unit Project. For American Heritage Worldwide, projects are an important part of the learning experience. They give students an opportunity to create, research, build, and present in fun and meaningful ways. All projects are unique and connect closely with the concepts students learn throughout a respective unit and subject.

Unit Projects are optional for all students, but that doesn’t mean you can’t require them of your student(s). That’s up to you! If students complete the project and submit their work, our coaches will provide encouraging feedback and a grade. Your student (and you) can review those grades and feedback in the student gradebook. Students who complete each project will earn their respective online course badge and downloadable certificate.

Find your student’s learning phase below. Download and review the project instructions, print the accompanying worksheet, and check the materials list so you can help your student gather what they need (very minimal).

Lunchtime Hangouts & Digital Responsibility

Our first lunchtime hangout is Wednesday, September 2 · 12:00–12:40pm. This is an unstructured time for students to log in and just hang out, and it’s linked right in their dashboard with their classes! They can chat, eat lunch, play games in a breakout, whatever they’d like.

These are monitored by parent volunteers, so thank you to our amazing parents who signed up right away! These will be held Mondays and/or Wednesdays throughout the school year, as we have parent volunteers to support.

A note for parents about Zoom. This week in Foundations, students reviewed the expectations for behavior and conduct as American Heritage students. In class, we remind students to use the chat responsibly. The chat is only turned on during class activities, and for a short time before class starts. It can be an incredible tool to encourage friendship and help promote interaction. If a student shares their personal Zoom account for other students to join outside of class hours, we want all parents to be aware. Please have a conversation with your student so they understand your family rules about joining other Zoom rooms outside of AHS.

Math & Language Arts: Ready to Go!

Math and Language Arts classes are underway! Please make sure your student has their Formative account set up and ready to use before class on Monday. If you need help getting connected, reach out to your child’s teacher or Melanie Norman.

For Levels 4–8 Language Arts, students should also have their course handouts and first unit book ready for Monday. Students should read the chapters assigned in the first lesson before class so they’re ready to participate and jump right into learning! The page numbers for each lesson are found in the Unit Overviews for each Level.

Turn-in schedule: Language Arts assignments are turned in each class day, with assessments due Friday. Math assignments are due each lesson day.

Getting the Most Out of the Learning Platform

A few Learning Platform features can help your family stay organized and on track this year.

Did your child miss a class?

Class recordings are available. Simply excuse your student’s absence in the Learning Platform, and the recording will become available in the same window so they can catch up on what they missed.

Need a different class time?

You can switch your student’s Integrated Studies class time yourself! Go to My Family, select the Integrated Studies course, and choose the time that works best for your family. It’s the same place you can update enrollment and billing, download progress reports under Reporting, and adjust chat features under Settings.

Your My Family dashboard. Every student in your family appears here, each with their own Settings, Profile, Enrollment, and Billing controls, all in one place. Open My Family
